The 2007 TN250
August 2007Our annual listing of Tennessee's top public and private companies
They fly airplanes, hawk jewelry and manufacture slot machines. They house prisoners, build shopping malls and run hospitals.
They represent the old economy — from construction to banking, from paper products to chemicals — and the new — from drug discovery to cell phone insurance. BusinessTN magazine's annual list of the 250 largest public and private companies — the TN250 — is a one-of-a-kind, one-stop source for surveying the companies that anchor our state's vibrant economy.
Based on disclosures from the companies themselves or other sources believed to be reliable, the information published here provides a valuable snapshot of the overall economic heft and growth of the state's top-producing businesses.
This year's list is a bit different from those of previous years. Absent is our annual list of the fastest growing companies in Tennessee — the Fast 50.That list will reappear in expanded form as the Hot 100 in the December 2007 edition. In its place, BTN has widened its coverage of top private companies to include all such businesses that rise above a new $51 million-revenue threshold.
Additionally, BTN profiles Henry Juszkiewicz, CEO of Nashville-based Gibson Guitar, and his plan to build his company into a multi-billion dollar behemoth. We also take a closer look at private equity buyouts frenzy of the past year.
The bottom line? The companies listed in the following pages are at the core of BTN's coverage. Their success, both as businesses and as story makers, are what make BusinessTN the value that it is to executive readers across Tennessee.
